Field Trip and Service Learning Assignment (75 total points)
For our service learning assignment we will be working with the Haldeman Community Center.
You will be expected to contribute approximately two hours of service. Opportunities for service will be available:
October 25 or 26: (depending on student schedules and which date is best for the most students and for the community members): set up for Halloween Party for the children
October 27: running games, helping with concessions (cotton candy, etc.) and doing face painting at the Halloween Party
OR
October 29: helping to take down decorations/dismantle the Haunted House
September 4-November 1: Monday through Thursday, 4:00-5:30: helping at the afterschool program
Directions to the Haldeman Hayes Crossing Community Center:
Go East on Route 60.
You will pass the Hayes Crossing/Haldeman Fire Station, then at the next turn off is Route 174 (DeHart's Bible and Tire is at this corner). Take a right onto 174.
Go on 174 to State Road 3318/Open Fork Road, turn right and the Community Center sits right there. State route 3318/Open Fork Road is the 2nd turn on 174.
Guidelines for Completion of this Assignment:
After visiting the center on our in-class field trip, hearing from community members there, and then helping with either the preparation for the party, the event itself, or the after school program, write a 2 page paper (typed, double spaced) that reflects on what you learned from our initial field trip from the speakers that day, as well as what you learned from your volunteer work.
You will want to include in your paper:
1. Your initial reactions to the facility.
2. Some of the things you learned about the community from the guest speakers and your participation in this project (community history, struggles, goals).
3. What role you feel such community centers play in the challenges that the region's communities face today.
This response paper will be due on November 9.
Your assignment will be graded according to the following guidelines:

You completed the reflection paper (the following rubric will be used to evaluate the reflection paper:
Level 1 (Beginner)
Writes little or nothing (1b)

Cannot identify cultural, social, economic, geographic and historical dynamics that have influenced the region (as seen at Haldeman) (1b)
Level 2 (Novice)
Responds adequately to assignment topics in writing (1b)
Misinterprets some information presented. (1b)
Punctuation, grammar, spelling, and mechanics are not consistently appropriate
Includes some important details from the field trip discussions or the service learning activities. . (1b)
Identifies cultural, social, economic, geographic or historical dynamics that have influenced the region (as seen at Haldeman) (1b)
Level 3 (Proficient)
Responds proficiently to assignment topics in writing (1b)
Responds with a literal interpretation of information presented (1b)
