Exploring the work of a contemporary Chinese artist and reflection on
how Chinese art has evolved and changed through cross cultural
experiences.
Instructions:
First: Visit the contemporary Chinese artist Xu Bing's web site, read about his background, and browse through his projects. You can learn more about Xu Bing and discover basic information from him and his work through the following interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxHWJjaUDQg.
Two well known projects of his are:

and "Background Story"--an installation at the British Museum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD7BHl5W86QNext: Find three projects that interest you from the websites, with at least one being the "Book from the Sky" installation OR the "Background Story" installation at the British Museum.
Finally:
Write a 3-page typed paper discussing this artist (background, training, interests) and his work, drawing comparisons with the traditional Chinese arts viewed in class.
Describe the three projects you selected. What was unique about
them? How do they relate to Chinese art and culture? What
role does text and calligraphy play in Xu Bing's work in general?
In the works you chose? Which of his projects interested you
most? Why?
