THE FOLLOWING ESSAY QUESTIONS ARE DUE BY THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON TUESDAY APRIL 1 . YOUR EXAM MUST BE TYPED, DOUBLE SPACED WITH ONE INCH MARGINS AND SUBMITTED THROUGH BLACKBOARD. PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, YOU MUST COMPLETE THE EXAM ON YOUR OWN--NO GROUP EFFORTS. IF I SEE PAPERS THAT ARE VERY SIMILAR, I WILL ASSUME THAT YOU HAVE COLLABORATED. YOUR TWO ESSAYS CAN NOT BE LONGER THAN 6 PAGES COMBINED (TOTAL FOR ALL THREE ESSAYS).
Answer the following essays as completely as possible, be sure to referencing specific works of art and/or architecture to support your essays:
1. How does the work of Bernini reflect the goals of the Counter
Reformation? Discuss two works by Bernini, explaining how each one is
representative of Italian art produced during the Baroque period. (20 points)
2. How does the work of Artemisia
Gentileschi reflect personal
events in her life? Discuss two works (at least one work in depth), providing
biographical information on Gentileschi that supports your esssay. (20 points)
3. Compare and contrast Italian, Spanish, and/or Flemish (pick any two) Baroque
art
with the art of 17th Century Netherlands/Holland. Include in your
discussion the
types of patronage available in each of these countries, the subjects
that were popular, the styles of each, and the significant historical
and/or
religious events that might have influenced the artists of this time
period.
Refer to at least two artists from Italy/Spain/Flanders and two from the Netherlands,
discussing at least one work for each artist that supports your essay. (35 points)
